Fishing The Fitzroy’s $10K Thready Competition

Rockhampton may be known as a barramundi capital but its Fitzroy River is also home to monster king threadfin. With a closed season on barra over summer, threadies are THE fish to catch.

Until midnight on January 31, 2022 there’s added incentive to target a Fitzroy River thready because there’s a tagged fish somewhere in the system that is worth $10 000 to the first person who catches it, and makes a successful claim.

The Fishing The Fitzroy’s $10K Thready Competition is an annual catch and release comp that is free and open to all anglers, but they must register online first.

The Fitzroy River has been net-free since 2015 and there are plenty of threadfin that have since grown to over a metre in length. If you’re into sportsfishing, local anglers will tell you that their threadies put up a terrific fight.

If you’re planning a visit to Rocky, it pays to familiarize yourself with the Rockhampton Recreational Fishing Voluntary Code of Practice that lists the expectations of all fishers wetting a line in the region.

And if you’re visiting the city and would like to alternate time on the water with other activities, then there are plenty of options including farm stays; micro-breweries or wining and dining;  a free zoo; strolls along treetop boardwalks; or a visit to the neighbouring historic town of Mount Morgan.

Rockhampton has a Self-Guided Tour App that helps visitors discover the region at their own pace. Explore Rockhampton is available via app stores or www.explorerockhampton.com.au
