Big Fish Memories with the Kids

PART 1: It’s supposed to be bad luck to have bananas on a fishing boat… but not everyone believes it, and Scott and his boys are out to prove other anglers wrong.

There are all sorts of ideas about how the banana superstition came about, but a few of them hark back a couple of hundred years, to the Caribbean.

One theory has to do with venomous spiders hitching a ride on the plants, another claims that methane from fermenting fruit below decks killed some crewmen.

Whatever the original reason, the bad karma stuck. But apparently these day’s that karma is obsolete, with Scotty bringing home a couple of cracking fish!

The folk at your local BCF can help you select the right outfit and they’ll probably suggest that youngsters go for a rod with a soft tip. It will be a bit more forgiving if they get excited and strike too hard too early.

PART 2: Nomad Sportfishing Adventures is a specialised offshore fishing charter with their very own mothership based on the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef.

Operating anywhere up to three-hundred nautical miles off the central-Queensland coast, it’s one of the most remote and extreme fishing destinations anywhere in the world.

Nomad Sportfishing have an 80-foot mothership, the Odyssey, with five dories between 18 and 25-foot in length.

Damon Olsen is the brains behind the operation. A former civil engineer, who left his day job to pursue a dream of running an outer-reef charter.

He now spends his time fulfilling other people’s dreams fishing the Coral Sea.

When targeting Giant Trevally and Spanish Mackerel, the guides on Nomad use a variety of Sebile lures ranging from surface-popping splashers, to deep diving magic swimmers.

Targeting fish that are potentially able to grow upwards of 60 kilograms, it’s the ultimate test on the fishing gear; from hooks, to swivels, lures, rods and reels.

BCF stock a range of Sebile hard-bodied lures and soft plastics, to suit every local area. Get into your nearest BCF to find out more.

If you’d like to sign up for the ultimate offshore adventure, then talk to Damon and team at Nomad Sportfishing, to find out about their upcoming trips.
