Chasing Luderick in Yamba

The fishing is red hot in the little Northern NSW town of Yamba. On any one day you could be out wide, chasing big reef species, or targeting deep sea monsters such as Amberjack, Kingfish, Jew Fish or Snapper, fishing for Tailor off one of the many beaches or rock walls, or why not chase estuary dwellers. The Clarence River is at Yamba’s doorstep, what an opportunity!

One species that Yamba is known for is Luderick. These fish can be found as far north as the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, but they prefer the cooler waters down south.

Fishing for Luderick requires a specific set of gear. It’s all about the light line, soft rods, pencil floats and small fly hooks. For bait, there’s no pilchards or worms in site. Luderick hang around structure, like rock walls, and feed on the seaweed and cabbage that grows on the side of them. Therefore, using the weed and cabbage as bait increases your chances of landing a Luderick.

It’s finesse fishing in every sense of the phrase. Firstly, anchor up into the current, that way when you cast out, your pencil float should be slowly floating away from you. Delicately rig a piece of cabbage to your little hook, toss it out, feeding line out as the float slowly moves away.

You will know you have a bite when the float dips below the water. Strike hard, but make sure you don’t muscle your fish to the boat. Light line means more chance of break offs!

If you’re looking for a basic gear list, we recommend using a small reel and light line. Split shot sinkers, fly hooks, a nice soft rod, pencil floats and stoppers.

You can find all the gear you need to land a Luderick at your local BCF. Light line fishing can be tricky, and requires a bit of know how. So if you are unsure, ask any of the friendly staff instore.
