Creek to Coast winner has unforgettable day on the water: ‘I had a ball’

Creek to Coast ran a competition at the start of the year for one of our loyal viewers to come out for a day on the water with Scotty and the crew. We had loads of fantastic applications, but one in particular stuck out.

Jay Weiler nominated her husband, Brett – a mad keen whiting fisherman who loves the game so much, he even has a brag board tattoo on his leg! Brett also runs the Alvey Anglers Australia Facebook page, and has a pretty impressive collection of the reels himself.

Sadly, Brett doesn’t get out as much as he used to, as he now spends time looking after Jay, who requires full-time care, so we thought he deserved a little visit from the big man!

Our spot for the day was the Noosa River and Lake Weyba. On the list: flathead. Of all the guides who work the Noosa River, Andy Phipps is up there with the best of them. Phippsy runs his business, Smooth Water Charters, focusing on hooking customers up with a few estuary monsters. He loves his lure fishing, particularly soft plastics, and for a bait fisherman like Brett, the experience is a new one!

The trick to soft plastics fishing is working the lure. You want to make the placcy look as natural as possible. This means a little hop in your retrieve every now and then will look the goods. Another tip is not to fish too heavy. Assess how deep you’re fishing, and pick a jig head that will allow your plastic to, again, float naturally through the water.
You too can book a trip with Phippsy, by heading to his website here.

BCF kitted us out with all the gear for the day. They also have a literal wall of soft plastics if you want to give that style of fishing a go.
