Getting a learners permit is an exciting moment for many young Aussies who can’t wait to get behind the wheel. Even more exciting for those who want to get offroad, and put their first fourby to the test.
We recently followed ARB’s Gary Woodhead and his son, Corey to The Springs 4×4 Park. Corey’s working on his hours for his learner’s permit, and Gary’s making sure a good chunk of those hours are offroad, behind the wheel of Corey’s first car, a super clean single cab Hilux. The benefit of coming to a fourwheel drive park like The Springs, is that you can learn skill in a relatively controlled environment. Skills like picking the perfect line, how a winch or set of diff locks works, and how a car reacts when you put it in certain positions. Gary also suggests coming with a few mates, so if you do need a bit of help to get out of a situation, you’ve got the support around you. In his store at ARB Jindalee, Gary sees a lot of people come through his doors, wanting to build up a car, often not knowing how some of the modifications really work. Mods like winches can be very technical to operate, so Gary recommends asking one of the ARB techs how it all works once it’s installed, then go and test it yourself. You’ll want to know how the winch works before you need it. If you’re wanting to upskill your 4×4 knowhow, or maybe you’ve got an offroad learner in your family, head into your local ARB store, or check out product like a winch, online.
