Bribie Island is the most accessible of Queensland’s bigger sand islands, given that it is only 40 minutes north of Brisbane and reachable by bridge.
Here suburbia meets national park, so there are plenty of facilities but still the opportunity to get away from it all. For that, you need access to a four wheel drive, and camping and vehicle permits from Queensland National Parks.
Poverty Creek is about a 15 minute drive from where the bitumen runs out at White Patch, along a soft sand track. It is on the Pumicestone Passage (or western) side of the island, and its sides are large and shady, although facilities are limited.
From a base at Poverty Creek, holidaymakers can fish the passage, drive inland, or via the beach to the remains of World War Two’s Fort Bribie, and they can enjoy all sorts of activities on the southern end of the island.
If you’re into water sports but you don’t have your own gear, then you can borrow just about anything on this island. Bribie Passage Kiosk and Boat Hire at Sandstone Point has vessels for hire; the Bribie Island Boat Hire at Sylvan Beach has kayaks and tinnies; and the Bribie Island Hire Hut at Bongaree, has all sorts of on and off water equipment.
Some of the toys from BCF that made our trip more fun were:
Molokai SUP Boards, a Mini LED projector, the Wander Uno Sleeping Bag Suit, an Atomic “Design your own Lure” kit, the Charmate Smoker & Grill. and a Shakespeare Whiz Kid Junior fishing combo.
