Despite being in its infancy, the Fitzroy River Barra Bash is back for 2019, and promises to be bigger and better than last year.
Running across the weekend of the 23rd to 26th of May, the competition is designed for all forms of angler. From the experienced to the novice, and everything in between, contestants are encouraged to enjoy everything the Fitzroy has to offer, whether that be a baby king salmon, or a metre barra!
Run by the Frenchville Sports Club, it’s a fantastic opportunity for anyone from out of town to come and enjoy the Rockhampton Region.
If you are planning on tackling the competition head-on, you’re going to need to know what these Fitzroy fish are chewing on. Nathan Johnston from Guided Fishing Downunder recommends a couple of different tactics.
A soft vibe is a must. There are dozens of brands, colours, shapes, but they all do the one thing that will attract the barra and threadies. A nice long cast out will see the vibe drop to the bottom, then just hop it in, making sure you can feel the lure jitter after every movement.
Deeper diving hard-body lures are also the sauce for barra. Pair this with a smaller-sized baitcaster and you can target spots between snags that the barra will often be hiding.
