A Springtime Road Trip

The team at Creek to Coast travel all year round, but we’ve learned it’s not always about when you travel, sometimes it’s about when. So, when’s the best time to go to the Southern and Western Downs? We think spring! Here’s just a few reasons why.

Apple Orchards

Stanthorpe in spring, can only mean one thing, and that’s apple orchards. These trees are in full bloom at this time of year. It’s spectacle not to miss. Just ask Jon. He used to run

Granite Belt Bicycle Tours & Hire, but now his business is up for sale, he rides through the incredible area, just for fun.

There are more than one million trees around Stanthorpe. So, you can only imagine how many apples get harvested every year, and how beautiful it is when the trees are blossoming.

Queen Mary & Browns Falls

This short but sweet walk is a spectacular way to enjoy the outdoors. You can view this epic 40 metre waterfall from all angles. At the bottom you can feel the mist on your skin as you watch the water crash on the rocks. At the top, you’ll appreciate just how large the drop is. Hot tip, if you follow this circuit clockwise, it’s easier on the legs.

The water is tempting, but you’re not allowed to swim at Queen Mary Falls. If you’re wanting to take a dip, nearby Browns Falls is quite refreshing. This track is more challenging, so be prepared to skip over a few rocks before you get there.

You don’t need to look far to find a place to stay. Queen Mary Falls Caravan Park is a relaxing campsite. The sites, along with 7 cabins, are nicely spread out, so you feel like you’ve got your own little slice of paradise.

Horse Racing

There’s nothing like a country race meet to top off your springtime road trip. You’ll find one of the best in Dalby. Saints Race Day does not disappoint. This year, there were three major races we came for. Firstly, the Plough In Cup, which is older than the Melbourne Cup. Secondly, the Dalby Cup, which was taken out by Charleville local, Bubba Tilley. Last but certainly not least the Creek to Coast Class Four Handicap. You heard us right, that special race was organised by Dalby & Northern Downs Jockey Club. Now, that’s what we call country hospitality.

If you’re looking to head on your own race-day vay-cay, the Caravanning Queensland website is a great place to start your journey. It’ll help you with all your caravanning needs, including a raft of amazing operators to check in with.
