Family Boating made Fun and Safe

You don’t need to spend a long time in Queensland to realise it is a sensational place to live and raise a family. We have gorgeous weather, and of course, plenty of opportunities to get out on the water. That is a major drawcard to living here, but it comes with great responsibility. So, if you’re looking to head offshore, make sure you consider these safety tips first.

Is your boat ready?

It might sound silly, but make sure your boat has enough fuel before leaving the boat ramp. No one wants to be that person making an emergency call to the Coast Guard, because they forget to fill up. Also ensure your boat has been serviced and check your batteries. Once your boat is good to go, you need make sure you’ve got the right stuff on board.

Have you got the gear?

Before you head out, create a check list of all the safety gear you will need. Go through all the gear on the boat to make sure it is in date, and in working condition. You will want to check that lifejackets are all the appropriate size for who will be on board. There’s no point to bringing an adult size lifejacket for a child or vice versa. Ensure your flares are in date and your EPIRB is registered.

Who knows where you’re going?

You should be alerting your family and friends if you’re heading out on the water. It’s important they know where you’re going, in case something goes wrong. It also pays to check in with your local marine authorities. Make sure they know when you’re expected home, what area you’re heading to and how many people are on board. This gives rescue crews a starting point to search if you run into trouble.

Lastly, when you’re ready to get out and about, get in contact with Youi. They’ll help you find cover that suits you.
