Fishing on Light Gear

If you love your fishing, you’ll be all too aware that sometimes it can take a fair bit of planning and prepping to be able to get a day out on the water.

If you stick to calmer rivers and inlets though, as well as super light gear, it can be as easy as one, two, three.

Maroochy River is always a great spot, and one where you can chase a wide variety of species like Whiting, Bream and Flathead.

Lighter gear is ideal for these bread and butter species.

“That’s the thing with this style of fishing, you don’t have to have the best of the best,” said Jye Daly of BCF Maroochydore. “Small 2500 spin reels, one to three, two to four kilo rods is more than enough to get you out there and into it.”

“It’s versatile for everyone to use.”

If you’re fishing with beach worms or yabbies, there’s not much you have to do in terms of technique.

In fact, one tip is to leave the rod in the holder so the bait will naturally settle without too much interference.

“I prefer the worms,” said Jye. “I think the fact that they’re a little bit harder to get, not everyone’s using them.”

“Everyone will be using yabbies so the fish here are going to see yabbies a lot more frequently.”

If however you want to get more challenging, you can always try catching Whiting on a popper!

The best bit about using the lighter gear too is that you don’t have to change too much, just get rid of the sinker and swivel and you’re on your way.

“We’re flicking these ones in as far as we can up against that bank, taking in that slack line that’s getting caught in the wind, keeping that rod tip nice and low, and just giving it just gentle sort of twitches down that whole way back,” said Jye.

Using this technique, Scotty scored himself his fourth ever Whiting on a popper. Hope you have just as much luck!
