Game Fishing in Exmouth

The West Coast of Australia has a lot going for it. We’re all familiar with the incredible colours of that coastline. All shades of red, blue and green. When it comes to the outdoors potential, the west also shines. The coastline is littered with speccy free camps, often some that are literal beach front.

Outdoor potential also includes fishing; and the fishery of the WA is nothing short of incredible.

There’s one spot on the coast that is widely regarded as world-class. Sitting more than twelve hundred kilometers north of Perth, Exmouth attracts thousands of tourists every year, many of them making the journey to try their luck offshore.

Josh and his team at Onstrike Charters have the fishery dialed in. They specialize in game fishing, targeting big pelagics, but they’re most renowned for chasing Sailfish.

During the months of September through December, schools of bait congregate in the gulf off Exmouth. From there, the Sailfish make their way in to feed on the bait. Given that the gulf is quite shallow, it’s not uncommon to see Sails pushing bait right to the surface, which makes for the incredible spectacle, of being able to sight-cast for these amazing game fish.

Scotty and Olivia recently had an absolute ball with the Onstrike team testing out a load of kit from Wilson. They have been with BCF from Day 1, and have gear all locally manufactured in Queensland. Can we recommend the Venom rods!

Once you’ve put Exmouth on your list, your next stop should be BCF. They also see the immense outdoor potential in WA, and recently another beautiful big Superstore in Cannington. You have to check that one out.

Finally, if you want to do Exmouth in style, we recommend staying with Dave at the Exmouth Escape Resort. The rooms are fantastic for couples or groups coming to the region to tackle the west.
