Landing Barra on Mackay’s Teemburra Dam

Everyone wants to join the big Barra club — and in Queensland you’ve got plenty of opportunities to! From cape river systems and the creeks of Tropical North Queensland, to our lakes and dams, and even right on our doorstep.

On this particular day, we set out on Teemburra Dam (about an hour inland from Mackay) with Paul Dolan from Mackay Fly and Sportfishing. It’s here you get a lot more bait activity early morning and late afternoon — and when the bait’s flicking — this is sure to get the Barra active!

As for gear, it’s just the light stuff you’ll need. Here we used a few Nomad Surface Walkers from BCF… it’s hard to beat surface fishing. Practice makes perfect too… the idea is to make a bit of an ‘S’ with your lure! You just never know when a monster will grab hold. And when they do — there simply is nothing better than the fight a Barra gives! It is truly iconic.

So if you’re thinking about heading up to the Mackay region, hook up with Paul Dolan… the man can do no wrong when it comes to chasing Barra, and more. As for a place to stay, look no further than Mackay Mantra! We were truly spoilt and you will be too.
