Leslie Dam, nestled just outside of Warwick, holds a significant place in both the local landscape and the hearts of its community. Phil Mann, one of Sunwater’s Operations Managers, has witnessed firsthand the dam’s evolution over the past 41 years. His journey began with the construction of the dam, and today, he oversees the operations with a deep sense of duty and pride.
Leslie Dam is more than just an infrastructure project; it is a lifeline for the Warwick community. It has weathered both floods and droughts, playing a pivotal role in sustaining local agriculture and the broader community. Over the decades, the dam has seen various water levels, sometimes dropping to alarmingly low percentages during droughts. Yet, it has also been a source of relief and stability, ensuring that downstream farmers receive the irrigation water they depend on.
Phil Mann’s legacy continues with his son, Chris, who has followed in his father’s footsteps, joining Sunwater as a storage supervisor for Coolmunda Dam. Growing up with the dam as a constant presence, Chris developed a passion for water management early on. His daily responsibilities mirror his father’s, involving dam surveillance and meticulous monitoring of water levels.
Leslie Dam is not just a functional piece of infrastructure; it is a hub of recreational activities. On any given Saturday, the dam is bustling with boating, fishing, and other water activities. The dam is home to a variety of fish species, thanks to a proactive fish stocking association. The area also boasts improved facilities, including new shelter sheds and barbecues, making it a perfect spot for family outings.
Sunwater, managing 19 dams and 65 weirs across regional Queensland, encourages the public to enjoy these beautiful sites safely. Whether for a day of fishing, skiing, or camping, Leslie Dam offers a great escape. Visitors are always welcome to say hello to the Sunwater team and share in the appreciation of these essential water resources.
