Leslie Dam, located just 13 kilometers from Warwick, is an engineering marvel with seven radial gates each measuring approximately 13 meters wide and 7 meters tall, capable of holding about 106,300 megaliters of water. But what does it take to keep this impressive structure running smoothly?
Recently, Leslie Dam hosted an open day, allowing the community to get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the water catchment operations. Craig, the Regional Manager, emphasised the importance of these open days for educating the public about Sunwater’s role and the potential hazards associated with dam operations.
“Sunwater is embedded in regional Queensland, not just here in Warwick, but across many regional communities from the south to the north,” Craig explained. “We play a pivotal role in ensuring these communities are vibrant and secure. Without water, these communities wouldn’t be as strong as they are.”
The open day also highlighted the recently upgraded recreational facilities at the dam, which now include new shelter sheds, a toilet block, barbecues, and other family-friendly amenities. These improvements aim to make the foreshore more user-friendly for families and the general public.
Visitors on the open day were given a rare opportunity to explore the dam’s inner workings, including the dam wall’s crevices. Sunwater employees conduct regular checks to ensure the dam remains in top condition. They monitor foundation pressures three times a week to prevent potential issues, such as hydraulic pressure lifting the dam.
Part of the day also focused on community safety services. Queensland State Emergency Services, Maritime Safety Queensland, and the SES were present to educate visitors on water safety. “Life jackets are crucial,” emphasized a representative from Maritime Safety Queensland. “If it’s not on, it can’t save your life. Make sure you have a license if you’re operating a vessel and always adjust to conditions and slow down in traffic.”
The open day underscored the importance of preparation for any eventuality while enjoying Sunwater’s 19 dams and 65 weirs. For more information on planning a safe and enjoyable visit, Sunwater’s website provides essential details.
If you’re planning a trip to Leslie Dam, the Horse & Jockey Hotel is an excellent accommodation choice. With its recent facelift, the hotel offers well-appointed Studio Queen rooms and an on-site bistro serving all the pub favorites, providing a comfortable and convenient stay for visitors.
