Packing the Van with The Feel Good Family

So many Aussies are taking an extended break from their everyday routine, hooking up a caravan and hitting the road for 12 months – or even more.

But there’s a difference between packing the van for a weekend away and prepping for a lap of the country.

Katie, Paul and Jasper – also known as the Feelgood Family – have been traveling around Australia for a staggering four and a half years. So, it’s fair to say, they have plenty of tips to share.

Their first and foremost is – pack light. Making sure you’re weight compliant is of upmost importance when it comes to being safe.

Their rule is one in – one out, even for things that might not weigh much – like Jasper’s toys – as everything adds up in the end.

Secondly, pack your heaviest items down low to ensure weight is over the axles of the caravan and to avoid the injury risk of heavy items falling out of top cupboards.

Thirdly, they recommend doing a front yard test run with your van before you set off to make sure you have the right solar and water capacity, know when you’ll need to dump waste and when you’ll run out of food.

Todd McArthur from Allbrand Caravan Services has seen his fair share of trips that have gone south and sometimes it’s from simple mistakes like leaving windows open or TV antennas up.

His advice is to always have a professional service before hitting the road, make sure your accessories are included on your insurance policy and that your van is valued correctly.

He also says make, and stick to, a hitch-up and set-off checklist.
