Meet QLD Young Achiever and 11-year-old fisherman Nicholas Thompson

Meet Nick Thompson, whose fishing career started off when he caught his first fish–a grunter (pomadasys argenteus)–at just two years old. Yep, you read that right: two years old!

Scott Hillier & Nicholas Thompson on Maroochy River.

As Scott states, you are never too old to learn when it comes to fishing! So we decided to take Nick fishing and head out with skipper Matty from Swan Boat Hire on the beautiful Maroochydore River.  ‘Maroochy’ means ‘place of black swans’; we were also hoping for the ‘place of good fishing’.

Nick’s fishing career might have started at the age of two, but fast-forward to the ripe old age of 11 and Nick is sharing his love of fishing with other kids. He was also one of two winners of a sports-fishing writing scholarship, has published articles, been invited to talk on radio. In April, it was announced that Nick was one of only four finalists for the 7 News Qld, BB Print Regional Achiever of the Year Award! Nick was recognised at an awards dinner in May 2019. Although he didn’t take home the big award, he was very excited to be nominated and to make the top 4.

Be like Nick and get out there fishing! You can start at any age and get geared up at your local BCF store — they have the advice, knowledge and know-how!
