Curtis Island is more than a great beach to holiday – it’s Queensland’s third largest turtle rookery.
Getting to Curtis Island is easy via the Gladstone Harbour; gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef.
From a time before time began, turtles have been nesting on Curtis Island and Creek to Coast presenter Martin thought all his lucky stars came at once when he didn’t even have to wait for the sun to go down to watch a Flatback turtle lay her eggs.
Flatback turtles are only found in Australia and their rookeries are in remote places. Researchers and conservationists are doing their best to ensure the ongoing healthy survival of the species. You can find more about their great work at the Gladstone Port Corporation’s Big 6 website – www.gpcl.com.au/big6
Getting to the island for your own turtle encounter is easy. Curtis Ferry Services operate five times weekly, with transfers between the Island’s south end and Gladstone Harbour.
As turtles mostly nest at night, you’ll want to book a few days accommodation at Capricorn Lodge. It’s close to the beach so you won’t miss any of the action.
