Kurrimine Beach Fishing Classic

Whether it’s up the freshwater creeks, in the mangrove-lined rivers or out on the big blue, there are so many great options to get out there and chase fish in Tropical North Queensland – a truly unique part of Australia, where the fishing is simply world-class.

From barra, to jack, grunter, reds and coral trout, it’s all can be found here in Kurrimine, a small village of 400 and a favourite fishing spot.

In its 9th year, the Kurrimine Classic has attracted over a thousand anglers trying their luck to bag a big one. President of the local fishing club, Sean Dineen is stoked!  “The special thing about our event is the fishing and spearfishing- a lot of comps don’t have that have that for anglers and spearfishermen.

And the big thing too is we’re about the family environment, its not about the biggest or the best -it’s about coming and having fun. That’s why we try and cater for the whole community to enjoy themselves and go out there and fishing in the creek or on the outer reef”.

Speaking of which, we headed out with Gordon Triplett from Garmin, a major sponsor of the fishing comp. Gordie’s Cruisecraft is kitted out with all the gear, so we’ve got the best chance at making it to the brag board. From radios to transducers, fish finders and chart plotters, the range is huge. But the real benefit of going Garmin, is the ease of use.

“Intuitive to use- anybody that’s used a sounder before has no problems using it, anybody that’s new to it can pick it up quickly and it doesn’t matter whether you buy our 4 inch unit or larger 22 inch screen – they are the same menu system. So you can come out of a smaller one, upgrade and you don’t have to learn anything – it’s really simple.”

In 2022, the Kurrimine Beach Fishing comp returns for its 10th year, which promises to be bigger and better – click the links below to find out how you can get involved.
