The Capricorn Way in central Queensland is a terrific way to explore some of the state’s most beautiful national parks.
One such place is Blackdown Tableland National Park. It’s about halfway between Emerald and Rockhampton and boasts deep gorges, spectacular lookouts, scenic waterfalls and ancient cultural sites of the Ghungalu people. There are four-wheel drive tracks to enjoy as well as kilometres of bushwalking trails. A particularly popular one is through Gudda Gumoo Gorge. It’s four kilometres return and takes about two hours. At its base walkers will discover Rainbow Falls, a stunning spot famous for its rock pools.
A great place to stay is just outside the national park. Redrock Bush Camp is the perfect base for exploring the region and has great facilities including ensuited rooms and even a self-contained cottage. It also has plenty of space for campers and caravanners. Kids will be kept busy for hours thanks to animal feeding, and camp craft skills and adults can enjoy four-wheel driving courses and the scenic chopper flights are popular with everyone!
At the end of the Capricorn Way, just north of Yeppoon, you’ll find Byfield National Park. It’s famous for its coastal scenery, giant sand dunes including ‘Big Sandy’, and remote camping sites where you’ll feel a million miles from the hustle and bustle.
