Boondooma Dam, located three and a half hours North-west of Brisbane, is well worth the trip. It’s a popular destination for fishing and boating with no restrictions on vessel size. As far as fishing goes, it’s stocked with Australian bass, golden perch, silver perch and saratoga. If you’re going to make a day of it, you may as well make it a few, as Boondooma Dam is surrounded by the award-winning Lake Boondooma Caravan and Recreation Park. No matter your style there is an accommodation option to suit. These include three two-bedroom cabins that sit high, overlooking the dam with spectacular views. They also have powered and non-powered caravan and camping sites. It’s the ultimate step into nature with wild kangaroos and koalas frequenting the park. Just under an hour from the dam is Boondooma Homestead Museum, Heritage Complex & Caravan Park. This place is a step back 150 years and steeped in history. Take a guided tour to discover more or wander at your own leisure to discover more about this incredible location where the Boondooma Dam claims its name. The homestead is also the site of popular events such as Spirit of the Bush where bush ballads are brough to life on stage, and Scots in the Bush, a festival inspired by the Scottish heritage of the original owners of the homestead. The Bjelke-Petersen Dam, near Moffatdale also offers up a day of fishing and fun. Water skiing and boating is possible and some of the most popular catches are golden perch (or yellow belly) and Australian bass. Throughout the year a number of fishing competitions are held here, and a stocked impoundment permit is needed to fish. What better reasons could there be for checking out these beautiful bodies of water. Check-in with Sunwater to get the best of it, and head for a day out on the dam now!
