How to support flood affected areas in New South Wales

Northern New South Wales was devastated by the floods in early 2022. Many of us sat at home feeling helpless as we watched Mother Nature tear through these towns. While months have passed on, these towns and communities still need our support.

If you’ve been at loss with how to lend a hand, we’d suggest planning a road trip to the region.

So, what the solution? Planning a road trip to the region is a good place to start!

Ballina is a beautiful coastal town with plenty to offer. We’d suggest the first thing you do is do as the tourists do and grab a photo at Ballina’s Big Prawn. She stands 9 metres tall and can be found just across the road from Bunnings.

If the Big Prawn has left you craving crustaceans, Northern Rivers Seafoods should be next on your list. They have a huge variety of seafood, from your everyday fish fillets, to things a little out of the ordinary like sea urchins or caviar. They can also cook up some of the freshest fish and chips around!

There are plenty of great places to stay while you’re in town. Discovery Parks Ballina is an ideal option if you’re travelling with a van in tow or looking for a comfortable cabin. Make sure you pack your rods and reels as the holiday park sits right on the Richmond River.

About 30-minutes inland is the town of Lismore. The community is still struggling to rebuild after the absolute devastation and heartbreak they experienced earlier this year. While many buildings still lie empty, there are a few that are thankfully back on their feet.

The owners of Darkhorse Espresso opened their funky café in July, with the hopes of revitalizing and caffeinating their resilient community. They also serve a delicious assortment of meals for breakfast and lunch.

There are plenty of businesses in town that see visitors from further afield stopping by on a regular basis. ‘People come from outside the area to ARB, they come to Lismore 4×4 Accessories to see us to get work done,’ explained the store’s owner, Andrew Fischer. While the showroom is still under construction, the workshop is back in action.

Another popular spot is Two Mates Brewing, quenching the thirst of locals and visitors alike. If you’re not able to drop by for a coldie, you can order their beers online here.

A road trip to Northern New South Wales is well worth the adventure so, what are you waiting for?
