The Inland Fishing Capital of Queensland

If you’ve hitched the caravan, hit the road and and you’re looking to catch your own dinner, then may we suggest you make a B-line for the Balonne Shire.

This region is known as the Inland Fishing Capital of Queensland!

Glen Cuttler, a St George local of 70 years, has the proof – he’s caught a 51 pound Murray Cod in the Balonne River.

The stretch of river between Sunwater’s Beardmore Dam and the Jack Taylor Weir is a popular spot for locals, visitors and the St George Fishing and Restocking Club.

The club is gearing up for their annual fishing competition on September 30.

Sunwater love seeing people enjoying the waterways, but encourage everyone visiting the dam, weir or river to do so safety! They recommend the following –

  • Read the signs
  • Know the conditions before you head out
  • Be familiar with your surroundings
  • Be aware of hidden and submerged hazards

Make sure you check the Sunwater website or app for all the info you could ever need.

St George is popular with caravanners and a great spot to pull-up is Pelican Rest Tourist Park. Whether you’ve got a caravan or a pet in tow, this park has you covered.

There’s spacious grassy sites, well-maintained grounds and quality cabins, not to mention a great vibe and location.
