OzFishing in Western Australia

White sandy coastline stretching forever. Water… every shade of blue and a fishery as diverse as any, Western Australia is an explorer’s wonderland.

The coastline is MASSIVE. More than 12,000km in length, and each kay as pretty as the next. From the wilds of Broome and Exmouth, down to the pumping surf of Margaret River, there’s something for everyone.

Flying into Perth, you’re instantly greeted by a few options to explore. Could we recommend taking a 3-hour drive south to Busselton, with it’s party piece, The Busselton Jetty. What was once used for timber loading, is now a beacon for tourists. Swim, dive, snorkel or fish…you’re spoilt for choice.

For the fishos, you’re in with a pretty good chance of a squid or two, across all of the seagrass patches. A brightly coloured squid jig, worked slowly back across the top should do the trick.

If you’re more into your bait fishing, fresh squid is gold for whiting…and being in WA, you’re in with a shout of a King George Whiting!

WA’s waterways are considered some of the cleanest in the country. This is great for rec fishers, particularly. But that doesn’t mean we should get complacent.

OzFish Unlimited run the country’s biggest fish habitat restoration project in Perth, Cockburn Sound to be precise.

It’s called Seeds for Snapper, a mammoth effort to grow back hectares upon hectares of seagrass that have been destroyed due to historic pollution.

Steve Purcell from the OzFish team puts it well, “we send out our volunteer divers they pick all the fruit for us, they put this fruit into these big processing tanks then the seed drops out and we head out and disperse the seed.

…80% of the seagrass out here in Cockburn sound has been lost over the years, so we’re trying to do something about that and it’s ALL community driven.”

So go on…why not wander our yonder and visit the natural beauty of WA. If you’re heading there to fish, can we recommend a stop in at one of the many local BCF’s in Perth, or indeed Busselton or further a-field. The teams in there deadest love their locale, the best people to chat to with a bit of inside info we reckon.

While you’re instore, you can also round up your purchase to donate to OzFish.
