Plastic Bag Ban

Under new State Government laws, single-use lightweight plastic shopping bags will be banned across Queensland from 1st July 2018. This is great news for our marine environment!

Olivia is visiting Tangalooma Island Resort, who have not used plastic shopping bags in their retail store for 5 years. Snorkelling on the Tangalooma Wrecks is the perfect example of how this ban will help to protect marine life.

Moreton is one of Australia’s largest sand islands, here you can dive on wrecks, feed dolphins and watch whales cruise past. Tanglooma Wrecks are fifteen vessels that were deliberately sunk to form a breakwall, creating a safe harbor for small boats.

Shipwrecks also create a haven for marine life, and here in this clean environment with a reduction of plastic, you can see the coral taking over the rusty hulls, many fish species including dolphins, Moorish Idol fish – that you might recognize from Finding Nemo, damsel fish and we even found a resting wobbygong shark!
