Yamba Road Trip with Scotty & Ash

We’ve got it pretty good in Queensland. Beautiful rivers, creeks and oceans all abundant with fish. But head over the border, and some say, it gets even better.

Scott takes his good mate, and Nova breakfast radio presenter Ash Bradnam on a fishing road trip south. First on the list, Ballina, and its beautiful beaches. The seaside town is renowned for its Tailor fishing, so the boys hook up with BCFing legend, Sam Hitzke to try and get a few.

Tailor fishing can be done a variety of ways. You can go the classic ganged hooks and pilchards, or you can branch out and try lures. Sammy has a couple of the Savage Gear Sea Missiles in his tackle bag. They give off a great flash, and when retrieved quickly, the Tailor can’t get enough of them.

The boys try two different spots. They hit up the southern rock wall in the late afternoon. Casting from the rocks can be a tad dangerous, so Sam adorns his rock spikes, basically big, tight gumboots with sharp studs in the bottom that gives him more grip. That way, Scott and Ash can stay high on the rocks, and let Sam fish from down low.

The second location is off the beach out the front of Ballina lookout. The boys target this early morning, looking for the birds attacking big schools of bait.

Next on the roadtrip is further south to Yamba. It’s a fishing village in all sense of the name. Every morning you’ll see trawlers heading out, followed by the keen boaties all wanting to get that early morning bite.

Ash and Scott jump aboard with Glynn from Yamba Fishing and Charters to head offshore. 30 miles later the boys slay the kingfish and jewies. Glynn has a cool little hack here. He uses a Kato Oracle jig, but puts bait on the two hooks. That way if you lose your bait, you can still jig the Kato back to the surface, if not, you catch a fish with the bait!

A truly awesome roadtrip wouldn’t be complete without good gear. BCF should be your first stop to gear up for your own fishing road trip. They have the Savage Gear slugs the boys used, plus all the gear to kit you out for an epic Yamba offshore session.
