Any angler would know, fishing can be an expensive hobby thanks to all the gear involved from the boat and trailer right down to rods, lures and the like.
With this in mind, we all need to think about security every now and again, so we have a few tips to help you keep your fishing items secure, thanks to Youi.
Secure Your Trailer
A trailer without the boat on board is still valuable so when you head out for a fish, make sure you secure your trailer to your vehicle.
This is best done with a couple of different locks as you need to ensure the receiver tube cannot be taken off the vehicle as well as making sure the trailer ball and hitch pin are secured together to prevent someone simply taking it off.
The simplest method is with a padlock so you remove the D shackle (which is a low rated D shackle that you need to have on there so don’t travel with the padlock already on your vehicle!), and lock the padlock in its place.
The next lock you’ll need is one that clamps over the trailer ball and ball mount, and the secures in place with a lockable padlock that cannot be accessed with bolt cutters or a hack saw.
The final lock is a simple pin to secure the hitch pin to the receiver tube.
With all three of these locks in place, the idea is to stop any method of removing various parts to take the trailer.
Boat Ramp Parking
Park in a nice open spot. If you park in a dark corner, you’re much more prone to thieves who can also remain concealed.
Use Your Safety Lanyard
Boats and jet skis come with a safety lanyard which is designed to cut the engine should you fall overboard preventing it from leaving you behind but it can also serve a security purpose.
Without it, the engine also cannot start so while you’re parking your car or using amenities, take it with you to stop anyone simply starting the engine and taking off.
Secure Your Gear
There is a huge assortment of boats around and many of them now come with special lockers to secure your rods, lure and other gear. These are also handy for keeping everything out from under foot. If you’re boat doesn’t come with a special locker, they are available to be purchased separately.
Home Storing
Try to keep your boat in a garage or car port where it’s locked up and out of sight. Not only will this provide better security, but it has the added bonus of giving your boat longevity, keeping it out of any harsh weather conditions.
