You’re the Skipper, You’re Responsible

Skippering a ship or boat is a big deal. Where would we be without the likes of Captain Cook… or Captain Kirk… or Captain Stubing?! OK, maybe forget those last two.

Seriously, being a skipper comes with responsibility. That means, when you’re at the helm, it’s up to you to take charge of the boat and ensure that all on board do the right thing.

Here are some ways a good skipper ensures everyone stays safe:

  • Make sure all on board know where the life jackets are stowed.
  • Give the crew a rundown on how to use the marine radio – including emergency channels and the vessel’s call sign.
  • Check the Builder’s Plate for the boat’s capacity so you don’t overload.
  • When underway, make sure everyone keeps their limbs inside the vessel.
  • Let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
  • Be responsible when it comes to drinking – stick to the soft stuff or water.
  • If you’re unfamiliar with the area, ask the locals before you head out: maritime safety officers, water police… even the bloke at the bait shop can steer you right.
