It’s believed that there are around 500 different species of sharks around the world! The majority of these species are apex predators, which means they sit at the top of the food chain. They play an important role in our ecosystem by removing the weak and sick, which keeps the ocean and fish populations healthy.
Humans are scared of sharks, and rightly so, but it’s this fear that often stands in our way of understanding their importance in our ocean’s ecosystem.
One of the best ways to better understand and respect these animals is by educating ourselves. The Shark Encounter at Sea World on the Gold Coast lets you get up close to these predators, whilst learning more about them.
Despite what you might think, we still don’t know a lot about sharks. Dr Johan Gustafson is currently studying the movements of bull sharks around estuaries and oceans in Queensland. His main aim is to better understand their life cycle and gain a deeper understanding into their movements.
