Catching Queenies at the Tip of Australia

There’s a few speedsters in the ocean that we all love to target, but on of our absolute favourites are Queenfish. Poor-man’s Marlin they’re known as, and for good reason! They pull hard and love to get aerial. They can also be caught in a variety of ways. If they’re sitting deep, they can be jigged or vibed up. If you come across a patch closer to shore, a metal slug will do the trick. But of all the ways to catch them, there’s on thing in common and that’s speed.

Queenies are incredibly reactionary feeders, that means when you get a cast into a school of them, you want to be cranking that lure back as FAST as you can. The idea being these fish will see the flash of the lure and chase it down.

Earlier in the year we sent Scotty and Andrew McGrath up north to fish with the team from Zulu Game Fishing. While they slayed the barra, they also had a bit of time to hunt down a few Queenies, at the mouth of the Archer River. What an experience if we say so ourselves.

The Zulu team run two seasons of fishing. When they weather and water temp is good on the East Coast, you’ll find them off Cairns hunting down Marlin. However, when the cool temps set in, the big mother boat is sailed round to Cape York and they get amongst the action on the Archer River. Worthwhile checking out we think!
