Chasing Luderick on pencil floats

Luderick can be found as far north as the Sunshine Coast… but they also prefer the cooler waters down south. The last time Scott caught one, it had been almost 35 years since… two years on and they’re still up there as a favourite!

Yamba was where Scott scored his luck last time… but this time he headed out from Jacobs Well on the Gold Coast with the great Sammy Hitzke.

First stop – bait. Luderick love their cabbage and yabbies but weed is by far the most popular and one of the most effective baits. They also require a specific set of gear, which means no pilchards or worms in sight.

The ultimate discretion is certainly required in every stage… and that includes anchoring. Check out the above video to see what we mean.

As for gear, a small reel and light line will do you just right… as will a centrepin Alvey. In no time, you should be on with a Luderick and see those pencil floats drop. There truly is no better feeling.

So, if you’d like to give it a go, head in-store to your local BCF or online to get your gear sorted. The team will be happy to give you a hand!
