Tips From a Fearless, Female Solo Caravanner

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results – Albert Einstein.

Meet Kerry. She lives by those words.

After a bout of breast cancer, a divorce, and the loss of a brother – she decided life was too short to stay in the one spot.

That very decision led her to the purchase of a motorhome – which she took off in almost a year ago to experience the sunshine, sandy beaches and stunning landscapes Australia has to offer.

Some of Kerry’s favourite spots have been Katherine Gorge, Lake Argyle and Mission Beach. Her travels have been mixed by staying with family, at a station or in a caravan park. She prefers that to being off-grid while solo – and suggests that every third visit in a different place should be for a few days longer than the last. It’s a chance to re-group and reset your home on wheels. She even carries an electric bike to get around town while parked up.

As more and more Queenslanders adopt the van-life, there’s been an increase in female travelers packing up and heading off on solo adventures – so Kerry has a few tips you might find handy if you’re thinking of doing the same.

Kerry’s personal travelling tips:

  1. KISS – keep it simple, stupid!
  2. Don’t sweat the small stuff.
  3. Don’t doubt your ability, be confident.
  4. Don’t expect, just accept – that you must do it all on your own.
  5. Seize the simple moments and embrace your freedom.
  6. Be kind & mindful to yourself, travelling has some ups and downs. It can be challenging but empowering!
  7. Be resilient.
