BCF Species Chat – Bream

The temperature is getting cooler, the bream are about to start biting, and Scotty’s excited! He headed into BCF Kawana to catch up with his good mate and store manager, Andy Gunn. Together, they talked bream and some of the best advice for getting one on the line.

In the cooler months, the bream come in to spawn and that makes them more accessible. They can be found in surf gutters, creeks and rivers.

Growing up, Scotty was always a bait fisherman, but he’s discovered lately that things have evolved when hooking bream. Gunny takes him through the few of the huge range of lures that BFC have on offer but the most important take away is to match the hatch – ensure the size of the lure that you’re using is the same size as the bait in the area. The same goes for colour too. If the bream are going to be feeding on white bait, make sure you’ve got a white lure.

The boys recommend using a nice light line and leader with a big cast. Bring it in slow and let the leader do its thing.

If you’re up for an addictive way to nab bream, then you can’t go past the experience of using surface lures.

Scotty’s dad would never have believed it was possible to catch bream with a surface lure, but Gunny assures him that not only is it possible, it’s an incredibly visually way of fighting and once you’ve caught one this way, you’ll never go back!

Traditionally the best time for bream is May, but often they’ll come in a bit earlier. Start prepping now by heading into you local BCF for everything you need. And if you haven’t tried those surface lures then give ‘em a go. It’ll make a great day out fishing even more fun.
