Taking care of your trailer

There aren’t many things that beat a day out on the water. But first thing’s first. You’ve got to make it to the boat ramp safely. This is why it’s important to keep your trailer in good nick.

Basic maintenance

Spraying Inox on your trailer parts can help fight corrosion caused by salt water. Using Loctite Anti-Seize to grease your shackles, joints, nuts and bolts will also help. This will also ensure you don’t get stuck at the boat ramp, unable to undo your shackles. Check our kevlar roap, to make sure there are no frays.

Check your lights

Before heading out on the road, make sure your left and right indicators are working. Also check your stop lights and tail lights.

Bearing in mind your bearings

It’s recommended that you periodically inspect your trailer bearings. To do this, remove them from your trailer. Check for rust and water. An obvious sign something is wrong, your grease will look milky. Ideally your wheel bearing grease should be dark blue or green.

When replacing your bearings, make sure you pre-grease them. This can be a messy job, so it’s a good idea to do that at home and keep spares on hand when you’re out on the road. If you’re not confident checking your bearings yourself, ask a professional next time you take your boat in for a service.
