Diver Whiting galore!

There are a few different species of Whiting that us Queenslanders can chase. In the warmer weather, the sand Whiting are prolific, but while the water still has a little bit of a chill to it, the Diver Whiting come out to play!

They are also known as Trumpeter Whiting and can be caught in the Winter and Spring months. For those of us in South East Queensland, we get a good run of them from the Gold Coast, all the way up to Bundaberg.

Whiting are a great fish for the family. Why do we say that? Well there’s no specific bite time, meaning you don’t need to drag the wife and kids out of bed super early. They also are easy for the kids to handle, no spikes, no teeth. Finally, when they school up in big numbers (like they do over Spring), the kids have no time to get bored. Just put a piece of bait on the hook, drop down into the school and you’ll be on in seconds.

Gary recommends a 2-hook rig. One hook tied to the end of your leader and one left to slide, split by a bit of red tubing. You can learn exactly how to tie your own 2-hook rig by watching Gary’s tutorial RIGHT HERE.

BCF also have a whole page dedicated to Whiting fishing. Whether you want to chase them on bait like we did, or maybe try your hand at a lure, all the gear you could ever need is there.
