Species Chat – Mackerel & Tuna

Summer is here which means warmer waters and plenty of pelagic fish like tuna and mackerel. Scotty caught up with Andy Gunn, who has not only been fishing for 20 years on the sunny coast but is also the store manager at the Kawana BCF superstore.

After a bit of mucking around, class was in session and the boys discussed where to find the best spots. Look for a good current and run in tide and let the birds be your eyes. If they’re feeding on a bait ball and there are some bigger fish thrashing around, you’re on!

When it comes to lures, the tip is to match the hatch. This means the size of your lure profile should match the size of the bait that the fish are feeding on.

Next up, the chat turned to trolling. Gunny suggests trolling anywhere between 4 -6 knots depending on the style of lure you’re running. Once again, it’s important to match the size of the trolling lure to the bait the fish are eating. It’s often worth trying two different sized lures, one out each side of the boat when trolling.

Wire is a must when rigging up live or dead baits and if you’re the type of angler who doesn’t need to tie your own knots, BFC offer ready made rigs. If you’re slow trolling using bait, make sure they’re nice and straight so they appear to swim naturally in the water. Test it in the water beside the boat to ensure this is the case.

The weather’s great and there’s no more perfect time to get out there and nab a pelagic!
