BCF Species Chat – Tailor

Scotty has been dreaming of pulling in another massive tailor, so he decided to catch up with store manager and good mate, Andy Gunn, from BCF. Together, they offered some tips for catching tailor, whether it’s your first time or, like Scotty, you’re dreaming of doing it again!

Generally speaking, the boys suggest that it’s usually during the cooler months, from August onwards, that there is the best run of tailor on the sunny coast. That time of year, it’s all about picking the best gutter to find them in. Scotty says the best gutters are the ones where the tailor has a good “in” and “out.” They want to come in, feed and get out nice and easy.

Andy recommends one of the most common ways to catch tailor is on metal slugs and Halco have a great range. Any bait fish profile on the hook should get the job done.

Scotty says bite times are also important. You’re looking at that transitional light period when most species are on the hunt for food. This is usually twilight before the sun pops up and again in the afternoon as it has gone done.

Andy also suggests that stick baits are also becoming increasingly popular in tailor fishing. Scotty agrees confessing to catching at least two tailor on stickies and the experience being mind-blowing. The fellas recommend using pilchard sized stick baits.

Gear up, grab everything you need from your local BCF and get out there and catch yourself some tailor! Extra tip – Gunny reckons they’re great when prepared fresh in the fish smoker.
