Quick Crab Tips

Is there no greater anticipation than pulling up a crab pot to see what’s inside? We reckon it’s up there with Christmas…just tastier.

Over the many years of his crabbing trips, Gary has developed a few quick tips to make your pot setup way more user friendly.

Tip 1 – buy mullet when it’s cheap, clean it fresh then freeze it for when the time is right. When the day comes, take your mullet from the freezer, put it in a bait bag and attach it to the bottom of your pot with a metal clip. This way, crabs won’t be able to tear your bait apart if you do get a couple in the pot, yet the smell and oil will still be released into the current.

Tip 2 – use clips to attach your floats. Rather than tying your float directly to your rope from your pots, attach a shark clip to your pot rope, and a smaller loop of rope through your float. That way you can just pop the floats on and off when you need them, and saves a load of tangles in the process.

Tip 3 – number your floats. Depending how many pots you have out, label your floats in order. So if you’ve collected pot 1,3 and 4…you know 2 is hiding somewhere!
