Road tripping out to Birdsville Races this September

Known as the ‘Melbourne Cup of the Outback’, the Birdsville Races is an experience like no other… and it’s just about that time of the year again to dust off the boots and hit the track! But first – the journey there.

“We’ve got people coming from thousands of kilometres – motorbikes, vehicles, trucks, buses, airplanes – all converging on a town of a hundred people that swells to six thousand on the first weekend of September,” said Gary Brook, Birdsville Races VP.

One way to get there is by joining a convoy! Birdsville Races Roadies isn’t a guided tour… but it’s a safe way of getting to the Outback with like-minded mates from across the country. They’ve all got the same goal… to get to the races! Check out their website for the full route. Plus, once you hit Birdsville, there’s a big program of events to get stuck into.

“We have fun runs, live entertainment, food vendors, and then there’s Fred Brophy’s boxing troupe, which is really in the heart and the centerpiece of town… you’ve got the Birdsville Hotel on one side and Brophy’s Boxing Troupe on the other… each experience at Birdsville is something you’ve never experienced before, you’ll never experience again, and in the words of Fred Brophy – you’ll be talking about it for the rest of your life,” said Gary.

Birdsville Races is on Saturday September 1-2, 2023. They’re celebrating 141 years in the heart of Australia this year – gallop over to their website to book tickets!
